Clean, in baggy clothes Solron had obtained for her, Tara sat on the sandstone bench next to the tall Addassar, rubbing the itch in her right arm. She had been amazed at the instruments they used to knit flesh back together.

Alice and Kerr appeared in the doorway; she stood up and Alice rushed forward to pull Tara into a tight hug.

“What on earth happened?” Alice asked with a worried expression.

Addassar greeted Kerr and another Kelon man, who bore an uncanny resemblance to Kerr and Melron.

“Melron was challenged by Perr of Talax for the human female. Melron had spared Perr’s life. Perr attacked Melron while his back was turned,” Addassar explained.

Kerr and the other Kelon frowned.

“Perr is without honour.” Kerr’s tone was hard. “Melron was foolish to take her from my home.”

“Honour has been satisfied, Te-Commander; Melron finished the battle, Perr is dead and the human female has accepted Melron as her mate,” Addassar added.

“Is this true, Tara?” Kerr's dark gaze fell on her.

“Yes, it’s true,” she replied, her bottom lip wavering, guilt making her feel ill. She looked at her sister. “This is my entire fault. Melron almost died because of me.”

“Tara, from what I understand a mating challenge is something not to be taken lightly. I’m just thankful you are all right. The healers here are good at what they do and have better advancements in healing. Melron will be fine.”

She was grateful for Alice’s comfort.

“What of Perr?” Kerr asked Addassar.

“Messron has seen to his body, he stood as honour guard.”

Kerr took a deep breath and nodded. “Very good, you can be relieved of your guard now that I am here. We will make sure Melron’s mate is kept safe.”

“Thank you, Te-Commander.” Addassar glanced at Tara. “Melron chose well. He deserves a female like you.” He turned and strode away.

Alice was looking at her with a delighted smile on her face.

“Well then I guess congratulations are in order.”

“Save it, Alice. It can wait until Melron is out of danger.”

“Sorry.” Alice looked up at her husband.

“I shall go talk to the healer.” Kerr walked through the doors.

Kerr returned a short time later with the same elderly healer who’d first talked to her.

Tara jumped to her feet.

“Melron is demanding to see you.”
